estoque, a manuten{\c{c}}{\~a}o e a libera{\c{c}}{\~a}o do
conte{\'u}do de calor oce{\^a}nico s{\~a}o processos
respons{\'a}veis pelo equil{\'{\i}}brio do sistema
clim{\'a}tico.
superf{\'{\i}}cie do mar (TSM) no Atl{\^a}ntico Sul, por meio
baixa (T> 37 meses) frequ{\^e}ncias, Em seguida, an{\'a}lises de
fun{\c{c}}{\~a}o ortogonal emp{\'{\i}}rica (FOE) foram
aplicadas para as tr{\^e}s vari{\'a}veis decompostas. Em uma
segunda aproxima{\c{c}}{\~a}o, o conte{\'u}do de calor e a sua
distribui{\c{c}}{\~a}o espacial foram estimados, a partir do
modelo ROMS.
Finalmente, as tend{\^e}ncias
processos regionais desse oceano.
as vari{\'a}veis ANM e RCV.
vari{\'a}vel.
45\${°}\$S. A variabilidade espa{\c{c}}o-temporal do RCV
sub-sistemas. N{\~a}o obstante, as tend{\^e}ncias lineares
frequ{\^e}ncia observada.
defasagem. ABSTRACT: The first few meters of the ocean surface can
retain/ store much more heat content than the entire air column
above it. Hence, the oceanic heat storage, maintenance and release
are responsible for the balance of the Earths climate system. This
work will contribute to understanding the role of the heat content
on the generation and maintenance of the sea surface temperature
(SST) anomalies in the South Atlantic Ocean in different time
scales, using observational data, altimetry anel numerical
modeling. In a first moment, SST, sea level anomaly (SLA) and wind
stress curl (VSC) space-time variability were studied, in order to
estimate the impact of each variable on the annual cycle and
anomalous processes. The Butterworth filter was applied to analyze
high (<37 months) and low frequencies (>37 months) modulation.
Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analyses were then performed
on both high and low frequencies of each variable. In a second
approach, heat content and its spatial distribution were estimated
based on the output from ROMS numerical simulations. The main
forcing mechanisms causing this variability were estimated, as
well as the processes acting on the heat distribution in the
surface mixed layer. These results were related to ENSO, which
caused alterations on the WSC and, consequently, Ekman Pumping,
thus altering the surface mixed layer properties. Finally, SST and
SLA trends were studied, so as to understand the spatial patterns
of this oceano For cach variable, linear and cubic trends were
calculated, the lattcr consisting of a new methodology developed
for this study. Results show that the annual cycle may account for
more than 60\% of the SST variability, but less than 20\% of the
SLA anel 5\% of the WSC total variance. Hence, most of the
variance is controlled by the anomalies. The high frequency EOFs
for SST and WSC anomalies present large scale patterns, while SLA
showed a noisy behavior, suggesting the importance of mesoscale
processes for its variability, There is a high correlation between
SLA and WSC in the some areas, indicating that the water column
heat content affects the atmospheric circulation above it. Low
frequency EOFs showed well defined large scale spatial patterns,
although they do not represent a great part of the South Atlantic
variance, The ENSO related climate variability response of the
South Atlantic was very punctual, being limited to the
Brazil-Malvinas Confluence region and the area between
\$30^{0}\$S and \$45^{°}\$S. WSC variability induces
variations on the thermohaline circulation in mid-latitudes due to
Ekman pumping, exposing subsurface heat content anomalies and thus
generating part of the SST anomalies observed in the Southwestern
Atlantic. At last, SST and SLA trends show the South Atlantic
presente well defined sub-systems. Nevertheless, linear trends do
not represent the regional variability in this ocean as they elo
not represent the observed low frequency variability. These
results show that SST variability occurs from south 10 north,
starting at the Drake Passage and reaching low latitudes with a
lag of 8 years. However, SLA variability is driven mainly by the
mesoscale variability, reinforcing the idea that heat content
variability is associated with high frequency wind fluctuations.",
